Overcast

by Jobelle de Torres

      It was January.

The sun was beautifully about to set in the sky. The cold breeze blew slightly and the scent of sampaguita was smelled in the air because of children selling around the place. Minutes later, the bell rang the mass has ended. Angelus hymn coming from the cathedral was heard as everyone went out. The cathedral was crowded of people who heard mass like a maze. Deafening sounds was heard from the cars, the hoarse voices of the children who was eager to sold their stuff and people chatting boisterously nearby. But the atmosphere seemed bleak and dry. Even if it was January chill, the warmth air could be felt in the skin.

Jack

As the young man took pictures around busily, "It was perfect time to take pictures” he thought. He finds an angle on everything he saw. It was Jack, a twenty-four years old man. He was an aspiring photographer, wanted to be known in his chosen career. When he was fifteen-years-old, he was fond of taking pictures on everything that was beautiful in his eyes. He wanted to be a photographer someday. But his parents were against about his dream. What they wanted for their child was to be became an engineer rather than to be a photographer. They always scolded Jack that there was no money in photography, he will just live penniless and in misery. But he didn’t listen to his parents. That’s why he left home and wanted to prove that his parents were wrong.

He lived alone and did different jobs as one can imagined. He had a hard time in the city. He worked all day and do part-time during night for a living. That was his life in the big city. But he was happy. He felt free and do anything for his dream.

Harry

It was getting dark. The cold breeze was approaching. As the bell rang, he ran in the crowd hastily. He didn’t want to waste time that he has still many Sampaguita garlands left. As he went along the mob, some people pushing him with disgust look and bumping him sometimes that made him fell in the ground. What a pity, young one! Harry, a seven years old child, abandoned by his mother with a thin body was sick. He has a hydrocephalus where there was an abnormal enlargement of the head triggered by nausea, fever and having a blurred vision.

Nobody helped him instead they just stared at him and passed by. He got up from the ground. He wiped the dirt in his knees and also in his worn-out shirt. He picked up the garlands in the ground and walked away slowly from the crowd. He has to sold the remaining garlands, he thought nervously. He has only few pennies in his pocket.

Suddenly, a group of children went his way that was taller than him. They forced Harry to give his money but he refused. He got beaten many times and they got the pennies in his pocket. They leaved Harry alone, crying with pain. That was his situation for God sake. He felt the January chill which made his body shivered with cold.

Beginning

       In the Cathedral.

Jack was taking pictures of the beautiful sunset, children playing along the sidewalks or what is in the crowd as he went around. Somebody caught his attention. It was the young child who was pale holding sampaguita garlands in the side part of the cathedral. He came close to the child and asked if he was fine. No answer could be heard from the boy. Jack felt pitied on him and offered him food and water to drink. In an instance, the boy didn’t refuse and ate the food that Jack was given to him. The boy seemed relief on what he ate. Jack asked his name,” Harry” he answered shyly. That day they became friends. They have a long conversation, the young boy talked about his family and other stuff. Harry told him that he wanted to look for his mother even if she abandoned him.

All of the sudden, he felt guilty on what he did to his parents after he heard these things to the young boy. Harry dreamed to be a teacher and he wanted to study like a regular student that he saw in the cathedral. This young boy still dreamed in spite of his condition that made Jack’s heart pleased. As the conversation went long, he noticed that Harry was liked an ordinary child that has also dreams. Dreams which once he was a child. He wanted to be a photographer in spite of his parent's approval. He was silenced in a moment. He was puzzled with emptiness.

The young boy noticed his silence. “Are you all right, sir?” he said. Until Jack came back to his senses. ” Yes”, he answered. He stretched his legs and felt little tired from his seat. They didn’t notice the time. It was already dark. There are few people left around the cathedral. The wind blew hard from the west. The city lights could be observed around. Jack bade goodbye to the young boy. But he was curious where was Harry staying.

It was past six thirty in the evening. The beautiful sunset was gone.

He followed the path where the young boy passed by. By this time, he was handling an old newspaper and an old tattered cloth. Harry went to an alley, where was dark and seemed a confine area. The place was on the whole filthy. It was dark and unpleasant smell was all over the air. He saw gnawing rats from the rotten garbage nearby. Flies creeps; and cockroaches crawled everywhere in the wall. He also saw some children lying down in the ground and having their sleep. The young boy put the old newspapers in the ground. Jack felt sorry on Harry.

It was a cold night; his body was shivering with cold and the old tattered cloth served as his blanket from the outraging cold. After seeing all these, he decided to leave the place.

That night he couldn’t sleep. He kept on thinking how to help Harry. He took his camera and watched his captions from the cathedral. He saw children playing around; beautiful structure of the cathedral; the busy street nearby and one of those pictures was Harry. He looked closely on the picture and he drew a smile in his face. His mind was restless. He has to do something for Harry.

Now, he already made up his decision…
